I knew that it was a bad idea to buy the Trot Nixon shirt last season...
If you know me, then you know that I have been in love with Trot Nixon since 2002. 2002 was the year when I finally discovered my true and undying passion for the Red Sox. I had always loved the Red Sox, but I was a September-Watcher only. I didn't join the ban wagon after the 2004 World Series win (YAY) but rather two years before. Before 2002, I did not have a countdown from the final game to spring training, or skip class to stand outside Gate C for tickets, or watch/listen to every game of the season. I was not a statistician. Trot was one of the players that got me involved in the Sox.

Trot was the love of my life... but now with the 2007 MLB season about to start I feel as if there is a hole in the Red Sox Starting line up. Trot, who was with the Red Sox from 1996-2006, has been acquired by the Cleveland Indians. Who am I going to cheer for? I can't just pick any new favorite player; they have to earn the right to be considered my favorite.

Even though I have know about this since January, and cried on the T when I heard that it was official, I still can't believe that I will be cheering for the Red Sox without Trot Nixon on the roster. Though I just found out that Trot is no longer wearing #7 as he did in Boston, but rather he is wearing #33 for the Indians. This is rather upsetting for me, but only because I hate change, in any form.

Trot Nixon was one of the most all around good team payers that the Red Sox had. He didn't have the name recognition like Manny, Ortiz, Varitek, or Pedro, but Trot had a keen eye at the plate and the ability to get on base, which helped the Sox in many tight spots over the past decade.

I am cursed. Every time that I go to the fan shop on Yawkey Way and by a current players shirt, they leave the team: Johnny Damon, and now Trot Nixon. I, from this day forward, will never buy another shirt with the name and/or number of a current Red Sox player on it. I will only buy shirts that have the name and/or number of retired player. And I will petition the MLB shop to supply shirts in sizes XS and S of these retired players, since they currently refuse to. Rice, Yastrzemski, Williams, and Fisk those are the men I will wear with pride on my back.

Trot was on his way to having the #7 retired in Fenway Park. He had his 10 years with the Sox, and he will obviously be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, but he did not finish his career at the Sox. That is the one piece that will keep the number #7 off the list of retired numbers. ::tear::

This is such a sad soliloquy. And a rather eloquent one, I might add, and I just wanted to offer my condolences. I'm not really partial to any one baseball team or fan of any one player, but I can empathize with your sorrow all the same. RIP #7 and Trot who is now dead in your heart, and good luck in your quest for a new fav. player!
